You too can contribute to the fight against climate change. In fact, it is not only large industries that pollute, but also us individual citizens. Each of us, therefore, must commit to adopting greener behaviors. Try to be more careful inside and outside the home. If you really want to do something for the environment, make your bathroom eco-friendly . There are at least 11 strategies you can put in place to achieve this. Here are which ones.

1. For an eco-friendly bathroom, don't spend too much time in the shower

"A 10-minute shower with a standard shower head consumes about 80 liters of water and is responsible for producing about 4 pounds (nearly 2 kilograms) of CO2," explains Casey Meehan, head of sustainability at Western Technical College in the United States. . Reducing your shower by five minutes can already make a difference. To further decrease your impact on the environment, install a low-flow shower head - it will save you about 20 percent water compared to standard portable shower heads.

2. Collect water to water the plants

Depending on the speed of your water heater, you may have to wait a few minutes for the bath or shower water to heat up. In order not to waste the water that is heating up, adopt a simple trick. Place a few bowls under the shower head and fill them . He then reuses the collected water to water the plants.

3. Ditch single-use bottles in favor of reusable containers

Think about the number of single-use plastic bottles you routinely use for shampoo, lotions, soap, and so on. Try replacing them with reusable containers, to be filled with products on tap : buying detergents & Co in bulk, in the long run, saves you money and helps keep plastic away from our landfills and oceans.

4. Make DIY products

In addition to products on tap, another alternative to plastic jars is represented by do-it-yourself products, to be created with green ingredients. For example, if you have brown hair, a mixture of cornstarch and a little cocoa powder is perfect instead of dry shampoo: it's plastic-free and toxin-free and you can store it in a recycled glass jar.

5. Save on soap by making your own

Soaps, like shampoo bars, don't add plastic waste to the world, so you should always prefer them. Generally, they are also inexpensive. What about those little pieces of finger that are too tiny to use? Collect them and put them in a jar with water overnight. In the morning you will have some homemade liquid soap.

6. Use sustainable, zero-waste personal care products

If you want to have an eco-friendly bathroom, do away with traditional dental floss, which is plastic based. Replace it with floss, which doesn't come in a plastic case and can be composted. Also, forgo the classic plastic toothbrushes in favor of bamboo ones. Since we should floss every day and replace our toothbrushes every few months, both of these small changes can drastically reduce the amount of plastic we accumulate in the environment. Also try solid toothpaste.

7. Choose an eco toilet paper

You can help fight climate change by purchasing more sustainable toilet paper made with more responsible materials . You could also opt for ethically sourced bamboo toilet paper, which tends to be a little more expensive, but is totally tree-free. For an eco-friendly bathroom, also pay attention to the paper handkerchiefs you buy.

8. Switch to menstrual cups instead of using tampons

Research shows that tampons take about six months to become biodegradable (not counting the non-biodegradable plastic applicator used by many brands) and that regular non-organic absorbents can take 500-800 years to break down. For an eco-friendly bathroom you should focus on menstrual cups. In the long run, they also lead to economic savings. Without forgetting that they offer great comfort.

9. Save toilet water

A low-flow toilet is an ideal solution for your eco-friendly bathroom, but installing one could involve invasive intervention, which is not feasible for many. Another way to prevent your toilet from wasting too much water (and, literally, stop forcing yourself to throw money down the toilet) is to fill a one-liter bottle with pebbles or small stones and water . At this point, firmly secure the lid of the bottle. Place it in the toilet tank , being careful not to let it touch the moving parts inside the tank. This takes less than five minutes to complete, but can save you around 3,000 gallons of water per year (one US gallon is about 3.7 liters).

10. Do the separate collection in your eco-friendly bathroom

Composting food scraps has become a common practice in many families who aspire to sustainability: if you do it too, it means that you have a green soul. Don't forget, however, the garbage you collect in the bathroom. You can compost many bathroom products , such as handkerchiefs and paper towels. Remember, therefore, to do the separate collection of bathroom waste as well.

11. Reduce the use of the dryer

Who doesn't love the feel of a soft bath towel straight out of the dryer? The planet, that's who. This appliance, in fact, requires a lot of energy. The classic clothesline is much more eco-friendly: it avoids the emission of over a thousand kilos of CO2 per capita per year. Try to dry your hair with a towel as much as you can and then give a little blow dry to style them.
